As a Blues fan, and small record label owner from Australia, in my opinion, the vocal has often become less important than the guitar.  The domination of the guitar in the Blues over the past 40 years has lead to a corresponding diminution of the singer's role.

In Soul/Blues, the role of the voice has remained front and centre.
