BMA winners

No doubt it added to The Stones' credibility... that's exactly the point. I
think some of the newer blues acts do pattern the British acts though. Joe
Bonamassa for instance...
Thanks Mark,

Mr.Bears,4I think Mick felt the Blessing was the Stones haveing Muddy open.
Your right also.Maybe they enhanced eachother. They both "had it" and I
believe Kieth and Mick patterned the Blues ,(I dont think their is one
U.S.Blues act that patterned a British style..).Wish I could have been there
for that tour.

If you dun paid ur dues,

Yeah Jimmy... Tab and his management have been aggressive in their pursuit
of BMA nominations... it's clearly important to them (the quote from BB
about TAB makes the point self evident... BB gets it). I believe in the
academic importance of blues as a genre, but that won't keep it's popularity
alive any more than it has kept classical music commercially viable. After
all, Muddy survived and thrived by opening for The Stones.

Here is an example of why I would want to participate in the BMAs if I were
trying to make my living through the music.

I can't tell from the foundation's website whether an artist has to have a
'current' cd/album out to qualify for a nomination cycle or not. I was
informed a few years ago, when I was outraged that Buddy Guy's "Skin Deep"
didn't win song of the year, that his record company didn't present the song
for consideration.

Yeah... There are lots of great musicians who don't have a killer show
business instinct or nose for marketing (some who are actually successful in
spite of it... and probably the best ones to be real... i.e. the ones who
play because that's who they are, not just because it's what they do). Out
of curiosity (and because I played on a recording that was nominated and got
a deal on tickets) I went to the Grammy's in 2010 and was amazed to listen
as Roberta Flack announced winner after winner in the classical categories
without anyone coming up to accept their awards. Eventually she got so
frustrated she asked if there were any classical nominees who WERE going to
come up?! Being above it all may be the mark of a "real" artist, but it
certainly does that artist's career and the genre the represent no favors. I
think there are many great artists who don't get nominated for the BMAs
simply because they (or their management if they have it) don't try to be.
Not really an excuse for the quality of the nominees who are, or a criticism
of those who aren't, or vice versa... just an observation.

Actually I think a good number of nominees for various awards had no new
recording or no particular special event in the past year, and some weren't
even that active. The BMA probably has some marketing value, but not all
that much, in part because it sometimes shows what one wouldn't want to
show... lack of qualified nominees, or same ones year after year, winners
and nominees not present for it, a DVD nominated that isn't really
officially issued, etc. I have to admit being less than satisfied with the
slate of nominees this year as well. I couldn't vote for any of my top picks
for best contemporary album:
Bobby Rush "Show You A Good Time"
Cedric Burnside Project "The Way I Am"
Diunna Greenleaf "Trying To Hold On
Grana Louise "Getting' Kinda Rough!"
Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne "An Old Rock On A Roll"
Laurie Morvan Band "Breathe Deep"
Quintus McCormick Blues Band "Put It On Me!"
Nellie "Tiger" Travis "I'm Going Out Tonight"
Watermelon Slim & Super Chikan "Okiesippi Blues"
It would help a lot if it could be televised, even if only on the 'net, but
it's clearly a struggle.
