Today In Blues - May 27

© 2004 L.W. "Junior" Jackson

On this 27th day of May in 1950 Jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater was
born in Memphis,TN.
---------------------------------------------------------

Saxophonist Earl Curruthers, who spent most of his career as sax man
for Jimmie Lunerford, was born today in 1910 in West Point, MO.
----------------------------------------------------------

Harmonica player and singer Junior Parker was born today in 1932 in
Clarksdale, MS. Parker began his career playing with Howlin Wolf at
age 17. He was the first to record the standard "Mystery Train", later
covered by Elvis. Parker`s real claim to fame was his voice. He began
his career with the likes of Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson 2, Pat Hare
and James Cotton, but his affection for the ballads of Nat King Cole
and Johnny Ace led him to become a pioneering practitioner of Soul-
Blues. He had a longtime friendship and musical partnership with
Bobby "Blue" Bland. They would tour together as two acts and use the
same backing band. In the late 60s, Parker began to get back to his
Delta roots. He died in 1971. His early Sun recordings can be found
on Rounder`s "Mystery Train". His 50s and 60s Duke recordings are
compiled on Ace`s "I Wanna Ramble" and MCA`s "Junior´s Blues"
---------------------------------------------------------

On this day in 1951, a young B.B. King entered the Memphis Recording
Service along with Phineas and Calvin Newborn. Supervised by Sam
Phillips and Jules Bihari, he recorded "She's Dynamite".
