Let me remind everyone that there is a "real" Blues Festival happening at
the same time, it is not that far from Ottawa :
Tremblant International Blues Festival: Terrific scenery ( the High
Laurentians ), multiple stages, daytime music. It is held (like the
Poconos) in a ski Resort that is a permanent festival village during the
summer ... They are even adding a Casino in the mix for the jet setters and
gamblers of the World ...

This year is their 15th Anniversary Edition:

Big corporation back up meaning: Solid Blues program every year for the past
several years. Addition of discussions and conference for those who to
further their Blues education ( or deepen their fandom, depending on the in
/ out point of view) ...

Volunteers are smiling and enjoyin' Blues, food is great and weather
permitting it is a fanstastic place to spend a week ... That's where I saw
Kandye Cane for the first time last year ... And a crowd stood in the
pouring rain for the main Saturday Act : The Mannish Boys ( featuring Finis
Taby, Kid Ramos, Johnny Dyer, Leon Blue et al ...)

So if you want to send the message that More Blues in a Blues Fest is a GOOD
thing, spend you hard earned cash in Mont-Tremblant from July 4th to 14th
http://ww1.tremblant.ca/blues/en/index.asp

And if the decline in booking quality ( adding of pop and rock stars) that
started at Maximum Blues last year continues, Tremblant will be the ONLY
BLUES FEST with a BLUES FOCUS lasting more than a weekend. I would bet, that
scale aside, it can be compared to Fredericton' Harvest Jazz & Blues
Festival but to be sure I would have to attend the Harvest fest (:-) (Note:
Harvest Fest is to small city Blues was the Montreal Jazz Fest is to Big
City Jazz http://www.harvestjazzandblues.com/ )

I even offered to take one of my week of vacation to volunteer there, a
"favor" I did for Maximum Blues for the past 8 years ... That's how good I
think this event is ... If you know increasingly disappointed Blues fans,
save their Blues soul and give them this link:

To illustrate Walter's point about "blues distance", from Wikipedia about
the Ottawa MUSICfest (:-) !

1995: John Hiatt, Buddy Guy
1996: Robert Cray, Los Lobos
1997: Dr. John, Little Feat
1998: Ray Charles, The Dixie Hummingbirds
1999: Smokey Robinson, Little Richard, Booker T. & the M.G.'s
2000: Sting, Al Green, Taj Mahal, Marcia Ball
2001: James Brown, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, Wilson Pickett, Blue Rodeo,
George Thorogood
2002: The Tragically Hip, Melissa Etheridge, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Colin
James
2003: The Mudboys, Rick Fines, The Maple Blues Review, Eddy 'The Chief'
Clearwater, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, Joan Osborne, Stax Sam Moore
2004: Bryan Adams, Wyclef Jean, Nelly Furtado, Lyle Lovett, Chris Isaak
2005: War, The Black Eyed Peas, Alison Krauss, Daniel Lanois, K-os, Simple
Plan, ZZ Top, Michael Franti and Spearhead, India.Arie, Kid Rock, New York
Dolls, John Prine

Look at the turn to keep getting more people on the ground 10,000 per night
is not enough anymore ... That's route of money and power and their choice.
What peeves me is that it makes a disservice to the Blues to take XXX 000$
to get ABC pop star in a prime night show and say well with the profit of
the beer stand we can book Carl Weathersby and Sherman Roberston at 2PM for
x 000$ (:^) ... Ottawa CISCO BluesFest in nothing more than applying the
Clear Channel, Chorus model to a Blues Festival ... With the Good, the Bad
and the Ugly that applies ...

BTW, anyone seen the lineup for the Ottawa Blues Festival? Lots of good
music and lots of it nowhere near the blues.
