RIP Sean Costello 4/16/79-4/15/08

Bipolar is the "modern" name for what used to be referred to psychiatrically
as manic-depressive disorder. It is a complex disorder that manifests
itself in different ways in individuals, but it generally involves episodes
of depression that cycle with periods of agitation, anxiety, euphoria, etc.
You can get a good overview at either the national institutes of mental
health or the mayo clinic websites. It is a treatable condition, but has to
be properly diagnosed and carefully monitored. One of my sons is bipolar.
He was hospitalized for a portion of last month due to an acute depressive
episode with suicidal ideation. He is doing well now, but this is a
condition that requires vigilant awareness and observation. I recommend
that everyone learn something about it.

I assume Sean had a interest in promoting knowledge about the disorder, but
I think we should be cautious about drawing conclusions about anything else
when we don't have the facts. I'm sure a donation to his foundation would
be a good investment and a wonderful way to honor his life.

Pammy Pooh,

sorry about the "pooh bear" thing. I agree, we need to know more about
this
Bi Polar business. There are a lot of folks out there living life in quiet

desperation.

Sean's passing has hit me hard, right after losing Blew Stew and my
bestest buddy of 41 years, A. O. I saw and met Sean several years ago
at the Blind Willie Fest. I had heard the hype about him, and was
expecting another Kenny Wayne, and he taught me a lesson in never
presume. His music was tasteful, beautifully executed and innovative.
He was a sweet kid, easy to talk with.

I would like to encourage people to contribute to his Bi Polar Research
foundation. One of this Grandmama Bear's cubs is bi polar and only 8
years old. Life with this cub is a daily challenge, but with daily
rewards. The poor little cub has been tried on medication after
medication and had the most horrible reactions to the meds, and failures
and punishments at school for behaviors he cannot control while on these
meds. This little cub is sweet and brilliant and is going to make his
positive mark on the world one day.

If Sean was dealing with Bi Polarism, he has even more of my respect and
admiration, and what a tremendous loss!
