SUNCOAST BLUES SOCIETY..............YOUR MOJO SUPPORT GROUP

"How could you NOT like this music?" - Phyllis Busansky (at the BITC show)

Last Thursday night was the "Blues In The Community" show at Gaspar's Grotto in Ybor City. The event was a benefit for the Carl Sagan Charter Middle School, and it featured The Walker Smith Group. As always, Walker and the guys put on a stout show, and the cause was worthy of better attendance. Being on a weeknight, it was an early show.you should have stopped in! (It's not too late to make a donation! Go to http://www.carlsaganacademy.org<about:blank> if you'd like to find out more and help them out). Friday brought our first voyage to the Ford Amphitheater. We had great seats for the Dr. John -Boz Scaggs show. It was my first time seeing Mac with a full band, and my first time seeing Boz period! They both put on a great show, but we had a bite to eat during that middle act.. What can I say? After the disrespect the guy showed to us at his last TBBF appearance, I'M not going to plug his stuff!

Boasting remarkable natural talent and a blue-collar work ethic, Michael Burks is a musician with deep roots in the blues tradition. He performs every song with intensity, conviction and soul. With inspiration from Albert King, Freddie King and Albert Collins, Burks' sound and style are all his own. Spread A Little Blues And House-Rockin' Music...
On Sat. May 24th we're gonna' be Jookin' with MATT WALSH at Dave's Aqua Lounge (0820 Gandy Blvd., St. Pete - 727-576-1091). Who?..Matt Walsh was born in Statesville, N.C.in 1977 and I had leanings towards music at an early age. He got hip to a lot of musicians in his preteen years, including Jimi Hendrix, Canned Heat, Chuck Berry, Johnny Winter and the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards is still one of his musical idols. These musicians were a road map to the music that he grew to love the most, but he had no idea that the rock music he loved was rooted in something much deeper...the BluesHe met and became friends with Bob Margolin around 2002. From 1973-1980, Bob played guitar in the band of Chicago Blues legend Muddy Waters. It's probably obvious that Bob has been a great influence and inspiration for Matt, but he has also been a good friend, and is responsible for introducing some great musicians with whom he currently plays. Matt hopes to spread a little Blues and house-rockin' music to our town soon. Showtime is 9:30 pm and its just $7.00 at the door!

THIS WEEK IN BLUES HISTORY

Modern Chicago Blues slide guitarist Ed Williams was born on April 8th 1955 in Chicago. Williams leads Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials, one of the premier party bands to come out of the 80s. He was taught to play slide by his uncle, JB Hutto. The Blues Imperials play dedicated, hard-edged dance Blues in the vein of Hutto, Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor. After signing with Alligator in the mid 80s, they gained immediate national and international attention, and have developed a large fan base (called Ed-Heads, no less). Lil Ed and The Blues Imperials are road warriors and their live shows should not be missed. They have half a dozen CDs on Alligator.
