Dallas Sax Legend Marchel Ivery Passes
Wed Oct 31 01:15:40 EDT 2007
I count myself very fortunate to have had the chance to work with
Marchel in the studio (on the Zuzu LP), and was able to hire him a
number of times for blues gigs. Unlike some jazzers, he didn't look
down at blues as being too simple. No, he cherished them as his roots.
No one who ever witnessed Marchel and Red Garland work their magic at
the long, lost Dallas jazz mecca The Recovery Room on Cedar Springs
will ever forget those shows.
There's 5 great horn players that emerged from the Dallas scene. Three
of them have sadly passed--Buster Smith, James Clay, and Marchel
Ivery, so now we're down to two, David Fathead Newman and Leroy Cooper
(both alumni of the Ray Charles band). Fortunately, the memories and
their music will live on.
