Consider the massive quantities of pre-war blues records, in particular
by the "classic" women singers.  "Them's Graveyard Wordds" by
Bessie comes to mind.

There were a lot of such records.  Mostly white A&R men thought
that the black audience was largely ignorant and superstitious and
they'd buy such stuff.

To today's audience, they may seem a bit hokey, even demeaning
but some very good artists get trapped into that game and they
deserve to be better treated by today's fans.
