There's a story about Buddy Rich as a young man, playing with
the Tommy Dorsey band early in his career.

The band was noted for its ballads, and during one, one of the
guys in the reed section noticed Buddy, sitting back on his
stool, arms crossed, holding his drumsticks.

"Hey, Buddy" the sax player whispered, "Aren't you supposed
to be playing?" Buddy replied in a truculent tone "Hey, man! I
don't do ballads!"
