Kudos once again to the organizers of the Arkansas biscuit. It's wonderful
how well these folks bring together such a great variety of high quality
talent-- and make it all run on time! Still my favorite festival of the
year. Of note to me this year:
...seeing Bobby Rush do his solo, acoustic bit during the Blind Dog Smokin'
performance on Thursday night. I had enjoyed listening to the sound clips
posted to the List earlier, but getting to experience it up close was great.
I think this cd should put to rest any arguments about BR's blues cred.
...I had never seen Gino Matteo before. What a guitar player and showman. I
would leave home and spend money to see him perform again.
...the same for Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. I've read good things about him here
on the List and he certainly didn't disappoint. His cd is in my car player
right now.
...Syreeta Neal was a treat. I hope that she doesn't stray too far from the
blues. And it was wonderful to see Kenny doing so well. He's one of my
favorite "contemporary" blues artists.
...Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Hubert Sumlin, Bob Stroger, and Pinetop Perkins
playing together...with the Mississippi River behind me.
...seeing Robert Junior's band play without him, and seeing Anson without
Sam made me miss both all the more.
...Joe Kubek and B'nois King are a great pair of musicians. I realized that
I hadn't seem them in over ten years until last weekend. Too long.
...the attendance seemed to be really good. Weather was hot and sunny;
unfortunately I have a low tolerance level for both and missed lots of good
music between 2 and 5 every day. I'll try to catch it next year.
...there is no better place to be than Helena on the first weekend of
October.
