SUNCOAST BLUES SOCIETY...................Your Mojo Support Group
"It wasn't that Nina's cup was half empty. It was that a person could drown in an inch of water." Leslie Schnur, "The Dog Walker".
Saturday night at Beak's Old Florida was a ton o' fun! It's a cool, funky place with interesting bits and pieces everywhere! The menu is eclectic and interesting, and da' grub is goood! Our friends Liz and Doc were in fine, fun form too. They play a really interesting cross-section of Blues songs, and they don't do the same old same-o! It was "Fearless Leader's" Birthday celebration, too..Hey Ken! Happy 74th!
For those of you not familiar with Conrad Oberg (who's appearing at the Sarasota 'Fest) I've tracked down a trio of "YouTube" clips of the young (!) man...

COMING ATTRACTIONS
Jook With The SEAN CARNEY Band...
On Sat, Oct 13th this should be a great show at Dave's Aqua Lounge (10820 Gandy Blvd., St. Pete - 727-576-1091). Sean Carney is from Ohio and he and his band were the International Blues Challenge winners for 2007 in Memphis. Uncle George, Dianne Pritchett and Ken were there for the competition and we all loved this band. The chance came up to book them and we jumped all over it. This is a great band that can play some very smooth jazzy blues and then kick it in to overdrive and get the place jumping with some rockin' blues. Sean also won the Albert King Award at the IBC for Best Guitarist. Starting time is at 9:30pm, and it's still only $7.00!
Garnering Praise Everywhere They Go....
On Fri, Oct. 19th the SBS is bringing NICK MOSS And The FLIP TOPS back for another show.and this time we're bringing them to the big stage at Skipper's Smokehouse (910 Skipper Rd, [cor. Nebraska] Tampa - 813-971-0666). Nick and the boys keep garnering praise everywhere they go. Though they've yet to win any of them, they get nominated for Blues Music Awards every year including 2007 when they were nominated for Band of the Year and their most recent CD, Live At Chan's, was up for Album of the Year, Best Traditional Album of the Year and Nick was nominated for Guitarist of the Year. We've added STEVE ARVEY to this show to make it a great double bill of Chicago-style blues. This is going t be one ol humdinger!! Don't miss this show! $10.00 adv/SBS and $13.00 at the door for the non-enlightened.
A Big Dose Of Passion....
On Sat, Oct 27th Reverend Raven And The Chain Smokin' Altar Boys come to town! The Rev. was the Wisconsin Music Industry (WAMI) award winner for best blues band in 1999, 2000 and 2004. 2005 marked the 6th time the band was nominated for this award. They bring the crowds to their feet at the hardest to please and sophisticated night clubs in the Midwest. Reverend Raven and the Chain Smoking Altar Boys play traditional blues, straight up with a big dose of passion. This will be our first time at Dino's Jazz Bar & Grille (16 2nd St N, St Pete - 727-896-3466) in downtown St. Pete (next to Jannus Landing). Show starts at 9:00 pm and it's still only $7.00!

THIS WEEK IN BLUES HISTORY
Blues vocalist extrodinaire Koko Taylor (Chess, Alligator Records) was born Cora Walton on Sept. 29th 1938 in Memphis, TN. Koko is very well known to most Blues fans and she has won more WC Handy Awards than any other female artist. Koko (who got her nickname from her love of chocolate as a child ) grew up on a sharecropper`s farm near Memphis. Her mother died when she as only four and Koko and her siblings grew up helping their father in the fields. She moved to Chicago in the 50s with her husband Robert "Pops" Taylor to find work. Pops went to work in a slaughterhouse and Koko as a housemaid. The couple played Blues together in the evenings and frequented the South Side clubs whenever they could. Pops encouraged her to sit in with the various bands and Koko soon made a name for herself.
