A fitting tribute to an inspirational photographer.
Dear Fellow Photographers,
Tonight at Tulane University, the New Orleans/Gulf South Chapter of the
American Society of Media Photographers will present to photographer
Michael P. Smith the Clarence John Laughlin Lifetime Achievement
Award. Mike¹s commitment to documenting the cultural icons of New Orleans
is unparalleled and most worthy of this honor. He is only the second
person ever to receive this award.
The event will take place tonight, Wednesday, September 22nd, at 7pm in
Freeman Auditorium, which is Room 205 of the Woldenberg Arts Center. A map
is attached (see Bldg. 83). We hope you will attend. I am very sorry for
the very short notice on this but, due to extenuating circumstances, it
could not be helped.
The event, sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, will
include a review of Mike¹s work as well as a panel discussion. Here are
the details from Tulane¹s announcement:
TAKE 2: CELEBRATING THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF MICHAEL P. SMITH
A panel discussion and reception will be held to honor photographer Michael
P. Smith. Mr. Smith is most renowned for his documentation of the music and
cultural traditions of New Orleans.
Mr. Smith began his career in the mid 1960s as the staff photographer for
Dick Allen at the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane. He has
authored several books on Mardi Gras Indians, Spiritual Churches, as well
as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival where he is the pre-eminent
photographer. Dr. Leslie Parr will offer an introductory slide presentation
of Mr. Smith¹s work.
The panel discussion will bring together distinguished photographers and
historians including Herman Leonard, Chandra McCormick, and Keith Calhoun.
Dr. Bruce Raeburn will moderate the panel and the evening will be recorded
for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation's Archive. The event is
funded by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Tulane University.
