I'm passing on this message about a benefit for a dear friend of
mine (and of many of you), Ms Carla Daruda. She is a wonderful piano player,
singer, songwriter, teacher and all around human being. I will be performing
at the benefit, as will many other musicians. It's gonna be a lovefest.
Sun., Nov. 28 Morgantown, W.Va. Rosewood Theatre 304-292-8999 Ernie
Hawkins, Ann & others
Hope to see you there.

Dear Friends:
Morgantown feminist and blues musician Carla Daruda has been
seriously ill with cancer. She has undergone one surgery, is scheduled for
another, and faces not-yet- determined treatment. Like many musicians, Carla
cannot afford health insurance, which is one reason she put off seeing a
doctor. The ultimate cost to her health as well as her finances has been
grave. To help Carla in this struggle, a benefit performance has been
scheduled for November 28 at the new Rosewood Cafe on Walnut Street in
Morgantown.
Carla has lived a life dedicated to her music, which she describes
as "shout and pound" blues, music she discovered on the radio in the middle
of the '50s, when convenional music did not reflect the reality of her
working class life in rural Pennsylvania. Since then, she has played in
clubs, often alongside great names from our region, including Smithsonian
National Treasure Nat Reece. She has used her performances to highlight the
neglected histories of great blues women, particularly of the early 20th
century, who broke racial and other barriers and suffered great hardships in
the cause of their work.
Just as her life experience brought her to the blues, it brought
her to the fledgling Women's Studies Department at West Virginia University
as an undergrad. She has participated in and supported the women's community
since the 1970s in her work as a radio dj, a performer, and a community member.
Carla has given generously to our community, perhaps to her own
detriment. If you can attend the benefit, it will be a wonderful way to
support her. If you cannot attend, please consider sending a check -- it
will be a small portion of what Carla has given us.
Benefit: November 28, 7:30 p.m.
Rosewood Cafe
218 Walnut, Morgantown, WV
To send a check: Make payable to Faith Holsaert, with notation for
Carla Daruda, address below.
Thanks,
Faith
