Hip; hipping adj., v. (1700s-1900s) hepi ["to see] hipi ["to open one's
eyes"] (Wolof); correct term is "hip," not "hep"; sophisticated,
independent, and wise; in fashion, alert, and courageous.  Some of its
popularity diminished in the sixties.
