Actually I think it might be best to get one of the many really good CD
collections that are out there and stay away from the books entirely at this
time. If he's just getting interested, just about anything is going to be
valuable. It's very hard to read the blues history, it's too academic. I
tried lost highway once and fell asleep, it's a good way to press a suit. I
like http://www.bear-family.de/ for good collections and a wide assortment
kind of leaning to R&B, country blues, and early electric blues (for some
reason the european sites are more worthwhile for the blues than right
here), also http://www.bluebeatmusic.com/ for a wide assortment, and also
http://www.rootsandrhythm.com for blues, gospel, a newsletter and all sorts
of things.
