I just got an early birthday box from my sister and in it was the book "Hip:
The History" by John Leland. I've just thumbed through the book and already
found something interesting to me. On the flap inside the front cover is
says the word "hip" is "derived from the Wolof word hepi or hipi ("to see,"
or "to open one's eyes"), which came to America with West African Slaves ..."
Ranging from Minstrelsy to Punk with stops in jazz, blues, R&B and rock
along the way, this looks to be a good read. It's not entirely about music
though, I think this book would be of interest to those of us who are
interested in where the music comes from.
